THE PELICAN BABIES
Judas Goats
Familiar to many in the North West Folk Club community, Mark and Lea treat us to a 3-track EP that manages to showcase the different aspects of their appeal and leave us hungry for more.
The title track is the main focus, a wryly satirical take on the present state of the world. Adopting the guise of two elderly gentlemen, they cleverly compare the ways of our current leaders to the legend of The Judas Goat, the animal trained to lead others to their slaughter. The humour in the song offers us a respite from the gloominess of the commentary and this is added to by the accompanying video, which is included here for your viewing pleasure.
For those unaware of their history, both members of the duo have long histories of song-writing with varying degrees of success and near brushes with fame and fortune – from Epic teenage major label releases to sharing band membership with later media superstar Stuart Maconie.
The remaining two tracks on the EP highlight the range of their talents. Their self referentially titled track introduces their distinctive use of the didgeridoo, highlighting a catchy, uplifting song with the power to return unbidden to your thoughts.
Time is… completes the current offering – a delicate, beautifully delivered song combining the two voices over tastefully restrained guitar, as they contemplate the importance of importance of using whatever years we are granted to our best advantage. With the focus on the voices, it also allows their way with a lyric to come to the fore.
Currently heading out around the FNW constituency for both guest bookings and guerilla appearances at open mikes and floor spots – our advice is to go catch them if you can – they certainly get our vote!
