IAN BRUCE AND KEV GREEN
Believe Me, I’m Lying
Strangely, when lockdown kept so many of us apart, the circumstances created a new and possibly unlikely duo. Veteran folky Ian Bruce spent much of the period of isolation sharing online performances to those similarly housebound. However, his housemate Kev Green eventually decided to join in the fun, bringing a long history of living, breathing and performing rock ‘n’ roll, to become an interesting mix, as evidenced by the choice of covers on the album, a curious offering of Bad Company and Fairport Convention albeit done in their own style, a kind of Come All Ye, we Can’t Get Enough!!
Their references to the classics (‘Shooting Star ‘and Sandy’s ‘WKWTTG) are mixed in amongst their own compositions as well as a version of Neil Young’s The Needle and the Damage Done – a man who spans (or possibly bestrides) both genres. There is no denying that both participants are, like many of us, of a certain age and possibly a little bit more. Again, this is reflected in the material, although it just gives it a warm feeling of lives much enjoyed, rather than focusing on any regrets. Mistakes are simply for the challenges of things maybe not working quite as well as they used to. Feedback from Folk clubs attest to this being the case, their live performances are an occasion to enjoy, as they share the delight in each other’s company musical and otherwise a continuing love of making and sharing music.
Between them, they could probably tell a decent tale or two, but for now, you could do worse that invite them to your drinking parlour in via the medium of a silvery disc and enjoy an engaging listen!
