A World of Our Own

1965 was the year I discovered folk. In fact it was the date I saw Donovan on Ready Steady Go.

The folk boom had been going for a little while before and folk clubs and concerts had been popping up for a few years before but I didn’t quite understand Bob Dylan and anyway I didn’t care much for his voice but when I heard Donovan I was hooked and wanted to be him! So 1965 was my year of discovery.

This new compilation of 86 tracks give an ear opening experience of what was going on during the mid sixties on the folk scene with well known names like Shirley Collins, Alex Campbell, Ian Campbell, Bert Jansch, The Seekers, Davy Graham, The Dubliners, Marianne Faithfull, Donovan, Paul Simon. Martin Carthy and Julie Felix.

But it’s many of the other tracks that remind me that there was a very big world of folky music out there who remembers The Southland Trio, Patrick Small, Glenfolk 4, Barbara Ann, The Slade Brothers, The Green Ginger Three or Ramblers Two. All out there doing their thing in all parts of the county and some like those even making records.

This compilation features many well known tracks Bert Jansch Needle of Death, The Seekers World of Our Own and Jackson C Frank Blues Run the Game but it’s the lesser known music that makes this set something more interesting and well worth a listen. To mention all the tracks would take far too much space. This nicely put together box set along with a very informative booklet is well worth a purchase.

Cherry Red Records are doing a great job in bring back to life some forgotten music of 60 years ago and this set is a good companion to the albums Les Cousins (60s music from The Soho Blues and Folk Club)and Dust on the Nettles (British Folk Underground Folk Scene 1967-72.

A WORLD OF OUR OWN The UK & Irish Folk Explosion of 1965 is released on 24th April.
