IVOR GAME
When Will You Fall Into My Loving Arms
It’s hard to think of anyone quite like Ivor. In a kinder more hopeful time, he would have a regular cameo slot on a popular TV show and be a much-loved National Treasure, an antidote to the Tate brothers and their ilk.
His latest 5 track EP demonstrates all the above. His songs are deliberately short, he sings what he needs to say and leaves it at that. There is not much need for choruses, middle 8s or the like and nothing over 2 minutes of your time. His songs are delicate, wistful, delivered in an almost fragile upper register voice with a trademark falsetto flourish as the songs require, and with a minimal instrumental accompaniment. There is something of a man out of time about both Ivor and his songs. Hints of old music hall, the films of George Formby and his ilk, of the courageous yet lovelorn character, whose inherently positive qualities deserve rewarding. The lo-fi nature of the recording, including a well-received live track, serve to underline this.
The songs largely (in fact almost exclusively) deal with the subject of love, being mentioned in 4 of the titles and a constant presence in the lyrics. The focus d’amour is well suited to his delivery, as he ponders over the nature of the subject and the chances of it being found, lasting or reciprocated.
Given the brevity of the songs, this EP is a brief encounter with Ivor, but one that is full of love and you leave with your heart a little lighter and your world a kinder, more optimistic place. Try it, you may like it!
